FAQ

What is CUSEC?

CUSEC is the Canadian University Software Engineering Conference, an annual conference about the most interesting topics in software engineering organized for and by students from universities across Canada. What makes CUSEC unique is that it is the only software specific conference that targets students. This means that the presentations you’ll see at CUSEC will be about things that matter to you, not just things that matter to professional developers. That doesn’t mean that the speakers we get are nobodies, either. Past speakers include David Lorge Parnas, Kathy Sierra, Ralph Johnson, Kent Beck, Alistair Cockburn, Dave Thomas, Tim Bray and many more. This year as well we'll have a top notch line-up of speakers and academic presentations for you, so don’t miss it!

Who should attend CUSEC?

Short answer: you. Long answer: CUSEC attendees are made up largely of students in Software Engineering and Computer Science programs in Canadian universities. But we also welcome professional developers and academic researchers alike. If you have a passion for software design, learning the state of the art in communication and processes, and want to meet and socialize with like-minded students from across the country, then you belong at CUSEC.

What do I get from going to CUSEC?

At CUSEC you will learn from the most influential leaders of software engineering. People like Ralph Johnson, co-author of Design Patterns; Kent Beck of Extreme Programming fame; Dave Thomas, co-author of The Pragmatic Programmer; and many others. These are experts of our field, and they come to CUSEC to teach you their wisdom. You will likely learn more at 3 days of CUSEC than you’ll have learned in your entire first year of university. And that’s not even the best part. At CUSEC, you will get the chance to meet and interact with other students from all over Canada. You’ll be able to talk together, learn together and from each other, and party together. You’ll make friends that like the same things you do. There is also the annual career fair where sponsors interview and seek out students for co-op, internship or full time opportunities. CUSEC is a great place to further or start your professional career, so bring your resumes.

Where will I stay in Montreal?

We have reserved a block of rooms at the Best Western Ville-Marie located at 3407 Peel St. for delegates to use. If you are a student coming from out of town, you should make reservations through your school's Head Delegate. This will ensure that your school is booked together, and that people can share rooms to save some money. To make reservations, call the hotel at 1-800-361-7791 (Canada and USA) or 514-288-4141 (International) and ask for the block under CUSEC 2009 Conference to receive a discounted rate.

How can I get to CUSEC?

First thing to do is find out if your school has a Head Delegate. Head delegates take care of transportation plans. They arrange for convenient travel, such as a bus that leaves from your school. Traveling with your school is probably your best bet, it is relatively cheap, fun and you get to make friends on your way. You can contact your school's Head Delegate for detailed information. You can also consider driving, taking a bus or a train and even flying to Montreal. If you are looking for travel companions, we can probably help by putting you in touch with students coming from your area. Send us an e-mail at info@cusec.net.

How can I register?

You can either register individually using the Online Registration Form, or you can register through your school's Head Delegate. If you're coming from out of town, registration through a Head Delegate is strongly recommended. Head Delegates will be arranging travel and accommodations for everyone coming from their schools, and this will make things cheaper and more convenient for you. Consult the Head Delegates page to find out how to contact your school's Head Delegate.
